Mandatory Spaying/Neutering Laws
If you are adopting a pet, Pennsylvania "Dog Law", Article IX-A, Sect. 902-A (see text below) mandates that we assess a deposit for all animals that are not spayed or neutered. When you adopt a non-spayed or neutered pet, you agree to have your pet spayed or neutered. This is a legally binding contract. Failure to comply with this agreement may result in a $300.00 fine. You may be held personally liable for failure to abide by this agreement. You MUST send the spay/neuter forms signed by a licensed veterinarian to the Humane Society of Somerset County.
Your deposit ($50 for dogs/$50 for cats) will be returned to you when the Shelter receives your spay/neuter form.
ARTICLE IX-A STERILIZATION OF DOGS AND CATS
"No dog or cat may be adopted by a new owner from a releasing agency unless the animal has been sterilized by a licensed doctor of veterinary medicine or unless the new owner signs agreement to have the animal sterilized by or under the supervision of a licensed doctor of veterinary medicine and deposits funds with the releasing agency to ensure that the adopted animal will be sterilized. The amount of the deposit required shall be determined by each releasing agency. In no event shall the required deposit be less than $30 for a dog or $20 for a cat."
- Pennsylvania "Dog Law", Article IX-A, Sect. 902-A
Dog License/ Rabies Vaccinations:
All dogs three months or older must be licensed before being released from the shelter. Somerset County licenses are available for purchase at the shelter.
Rabies vaccinations are required for dogs and cats three months of age or older.
License Fees:
$8.70 ( no discount for animals that have been altered)
Seniors 65 & over:
$6.70 for all dogs adopted or owned by individuals 65 and over ( no discount for animals that have been altered)
**Even if you intend to get your newly adopted dog a lifetime license, you will still be required to purchase a regular yearly license on the day of adoption. A lifetime dog license can only be purchased if the dog is microchipped or tattooed. We do not provide microchipping or tattooing services; these will be arrangements you will need to make after adopting, at which point a lifetime license may be obtained.**
To Bring in Animals:
Dogs -- $40
Cats -- $40
If you are looking to bring in an owned pet, the above fee will need to be paid. We also ask that you bring any veterinary records for the animal. If the animal is on a special diet or requires medication, we also ask that these items be brought with the animal. Finally, we always welcome comfort items, such as favorite toys, blankets, or beds, to be brought with the animal to help with the transition period.
